I’m amazed at the degree to which people (especially politicians) patronize others in order to try to influence them.  Whether it’s to affect a particular voting group or even a particular country, it’s pretty obvious when it’s used.  And a simple example is how speakers usually say “that’s a great question” to nearly every question asked by an audience member.

My recommendation is to consider that people are smarter than that, and if you want to influence them you should try to use techniques that acknowledge it.  Even if they aren’t at least you’ve avoided making an ass of yourself.
